Live Review: Castle Party - Bolkow 2023 (Day 3) Instead of losing his geographical bearings, as Ulysses does in Homer’s text, the protagonist in Franz’s version loses himself in a haze of weed.CD Review: Warfield Within - Beast Inside “Not the Joyce thing but the Greek story,” he says. (“If I had a song idea right now, I’d call it’Paper Cup,'” he explains, looking at the paper cup in front of him.) But something about the impromptu title inspired Kapranos to flesh out the song. The song began as a Kapra-nos melody, which he hastily titled “Ulysses” because he happened to glance at a copy of James Joyce’s masterpiece on his bookshelf. The breakthrough came with “Ulysses,” which opens the album and is the first single. “You kind of go, ‘What the fuck are we doing here?'” “After all that work, you want to go home with a song that you like, and that wasn’t happening,” says Hardy. “It just felt dishonest.” By June 2007, when Franz came out of hibernation to play a few shows, they were still working out the kinks: Of the five new tunes they played, only one would wind up on Tonight. But sessions with Kylie Minogue producer Brian Iliggins, who also co-wrote Cher’s smash “Believe,” didn’t pan out. The band boarded up the windows for privacy - creating a cocoon-like clubhouse - bought vintage synths and other classic gear and began forming songs. The disc came together in a 19th-century municipal building - once a town hall and more recently the site of a rehab clinic - in the rundown Glasgow neighborhood of Govan. “Just listening to the radio in the U.K., it’s all these fucking dull indie-guitar bands,” says I lardy. “It was like complete aimless nonsense.” They agreed on one thing: They didn’t want to recycle overplayed elements from their previous discs, especially the high-hat backbeats and the bouncing, disco-ready bass pattern that powered their 2004 breakthrough hit, “Take Me Out.” (Kapranos went so far as to tell Thomson, “You can’t play that beat anymore - do something else!”) After years of grueling tours, spawned by “Take Me Out” and perpetuated by the success of their second album, 2005’s You Could Have It So Much Better (which sold 2 million globally but left the band and many critics a bit cold), the quartet wanted to shake things up. “We jammed for about 30 minutes and Alex went, ‘Stop, stop, stop, stop!'” says Thomson. When Kapranos and his bandmates - drummer Paul Thomson, bassist Bob Hardy and guitarist Nick McCarthy (who doubles on keyboards) - gathered in Glasgow in February 2007 after a lengthy vacation, they had no clue what direction their next project would take. Satisfied, he heads back to the seaside club and to join his band in road-testing cuts from the excellent, synth-heavy Tonight - which he describes as the product of more than 18 tough months of “crazy sonic experimentation.” “You can’t get this anywhere in the U.K.,” Kapranos says happily. Tonight’s adventure ends at Roberto’s Taco Shop, where the payoff comes in the form of two carne asada tacos, aside of guacamole and some horchata juice. “It frees you from patterns that you fall into naturally.” “I love to have no idea where I am, because I have no idea what will happen next,” he says. After soundcheck at Canes Bar & Grill, Kapranos zips up his favorite black leather jacket and heads off on foot with no specific destination in mind. tour in advance of its third album, Tonight: Franz Ferdinand. The Franz Ferdinand frontman, who is such a foodie he recently published a book about his favorite meals, is in San Diego, where his band is wrapping an intimate U.S. From a glance, this might seem like a gimmick, but it's a really interesting component that provides a new way to play. The elephant in the room you'll all be wanting to hear about is this controller's unique mini racing wheel. There's only one level to these, but they're there should you want that faster-twitch press at your disposal.Īlright, I've stalled long enough. Even so, their small size made slip-offs a common annoyance.Ībove that, placed next to the triggers are some trigger stop switches. This was a shame, but the "4" and "3" buttons have a nice slanted edge that meant they were slightly more usable. This placement, combined with their small size, makes them difficult to use, and although your grip may differ, for me they were only really comfortable to use with my middle fingers. On the rear side, there are four back buttons that are small, circular, and built into the controller's body, as opposed to the grips. It has an options, share, and an in-game menu button too, which are all anchored by a central Xbox Home button.ĭown below the facial modules, we have handy utility buttons for controlling headset volume and switching controller profiles, and of course, a 3.5mm jack where you can plug in one of the best gaming headsets. It's also compatible with the best gaming PCs, so its face buttons are the standard A, X, Y, and B. It's designed for Xbox predominantly, which means it's compatible with the Series X and S, and can be an Xbox One controller. When it comes to features, the Thrustmaster eSwap XR Pro Controller is one of those gamepads that just keeps giving. At least you get some beefy rumble vibration. For a next-gen update to the eSwap line, a wireless dongle would have been a nice addition. It is a tad disappointing that for the money, you don't get any sort of wireless connectivity here. I imagine this is something to do with cutting costs since older eSwap controllers use the same connection and creating "new" instead of iterating would have meant higher production costs - this is just me guessing though. On a more practical level, the gamepad connects via Micro-USB to USB - a strange choice for connectivity in 2023, but since there's a cable provided in the box, I'll allow it. I generally don't have any problem with my hands being idle, but my god does this controller's removable gubbins satisfy my brain when I'm playing a game with cutscenes I just couldn't care less about. Between them and the analog sticks coming out with a simple tug, this controller will undoubtedly soothe the brains of anyone that likes a fidget toy. The aesthetics here are no short of stunning, and it all contributes to a very premium-feeling and weighty controller in the hands.Īnother thing I love about this design is that the grip panels come off if you want to swap them out, and they're only held on by some internal magnets. The back and grip panels are a textured grey and black, and darker accents to buttons make everything scannable. The face panels are a clean white, but a series of flashy rouge highlights give it some serious flare. Light ConesĮchoes of the Coffin is Luocha’s signature 5★ Light Cone and is exclusive to the Brilliant Fixation Warp. He consolidates Imaginary Break, healing, cleansing, and buff removal, all while being generally SP positive. This, coupled with Luocha’s constant Basic ATK usage, allows him to quickly melt through the Toughness bar of Imaginary-weak enemies. His Ultimate inflicts Imaginary damage on all enemies while removing one buff from them. Both healing from Skill and Talent will cleanse the ally. His Talent is triggered when Luocha possesses two Abyss Flower stacks and operates on a 2 turn cycle, meaning that maintaining uptime is essential to consistent healing. Luocha provides healing through his Skill and Talent, with the latter automatically healing any ally that falls below 50% HP. Luocha is a sustain unit that supports his team through healing, cleansing ally debuffs, and dispelling enemy buffs. Path of Abundance: These characters heal allies and restore HP to the team. When an enemy is Weakness Broken by Imaginary DMG, the enemy is pushed down in the turn order (even more than when broken by Quantum) and inflicted with Imprisonment, which reduces the enemy’s Speed stat as well as further delaying their action. He deals Imaginary damage and belongs to the Abundance Path. Luochais a 5★ character available exclusively from the Laic Pursuit Warp in Honkai: Star Rail. With this 'Capture photos outside the frame' mode on, there is no cropping involved as you are literally taking your pick of the frame from a much larger canvas. This is activated by going to Edit > Crop > Auto adjust or selecting the different frames sizes and orientations prompted. Under normal circumstances, you could fix the horizon when in the crop mode, but it would also crop the image. This lets you recompose the shot in post-processing, in case you have cut out a critical portion in the frame or if the horizon isn’t horizontal. This mode is off by default, but what it basically does is capture a bit of the area above/below and from the sides of the frame, you may have shot. In the camera settings, there is an option called ‘Capture photos outside the frame’. With the new sensor coming with 100 percent focus pixels, focus acquisition is fast.Īpple iPhone 11 Pro Max capturing outside the frame. Even shooting against the light gives a great output. It exposes the bright and dark areas optimally so that you get a higher dynamic range. The dynamic range on the iPhone 11 Pro Max cameras is amazing. All three lenses - wide, telephoto and ultra-wide - perform quite well. There is nothing really to complain about here. Photographs shot in daylight are pleasing. It just does not have enough punch or clarity when it comes to low light selfies - and no, the Night Mode does not work on the front camera. If you dig selfies in low lit situations, the crown clearly belongs to the Pixel 3 XL. The iPhone 11 Pro Max in comparison performed poorly in both selfies and portrait mode selfies, in low light. The Huawei P30 Pro failed to give a portrait photo despite choosing that mode, although its AI mode lights up dark scenes well when you are taking a selfie. The compute magic offered by Pixel 3 XL is unmatched till date. One area where the Pixel 3 XL excels is in selfies and portrait mode shots at night. Yes, noise does creep in but that’s unavoidable. It is difficult to put a finger on which of these three is the best in low light photography as all three give a pleasing output when viewed on the smartphone display. Huawei P30 Pro in AI mode gives strange colours but with the AI mode off, it gave great images. The low light output of the iPhone 11 Pro Max is comparable with the Pixel 3XL on most counts. If you are a photography enthusiast and want to play around with the photos on your large screen monitor, then you will notice noise when working with 100 percent crops.ġ00 percent crop of the above image taken from the iPhone 11 Pro Max (left) and the Google Pixel 3XL (right) shows that Pixel 3XL was able to light up the scene better and has comparatively lesser noise. On the phone, the images look fabulous and that’s good enough for most iPhone users. The overall image quality in low light was pleasing. This is much better than the Pixel's frozen image and countdown timer. You see them gradually take form and get brighter as the low-light timer runs down. On a side note, I love how the images are captured in low light mode. Phones like the Pixel and P30 Pro tend to turn night into day, which isn't usually the objective of the photographer. One advantage the iPhone has here is that evening and night mode shots look like they were taken in low light. To check out the high resolution, uncompressed images shot from the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max head over to our Flickr Album. Also, the phone isn't as forgiving of shaky hands as the other phones. Apple claims to do that as well, but in my sample shots, I didn’t see that happening. This wasn’t the case with Huawei and Pixel phones, which use AI to get rid of the blurry portions to give you a well-lit, detailed scene. The Night Mode on the iPhone 11 Pro series does exposure bracketing and captures everything in the scene in a way that if there is any movement within the scene, it is captured as a blur. However, you can turn it off if you don’t want it - but I doubt anyone would do that. This activates based on the luminosity of light around you - you can’t manually activate it. Right off the bat, the photographs shot in low light activate Night Mode automatically, which is seen in the form of a yellow, circular icon beside the flash icon. You won’t regret taking iPhone 11 Pro Max on your evening out. Over the last few years, the iPhone has been on the back foot when it came to low light photography. The iPhone 11 Pro Max has significantly improved on this front. The iPhone XS Max (Review) couldn’t even hold a candle to Pixel 3XL. The Pixel 3XL (Review) and Huawei P30 Pro (Review) have performed excellently on the low light photography front. I took out the iPhone 11 Pro Max, Google Pixel 3XL and the Huawei P30 Pro for an evening of photography in South Mumbai. Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max with its triple camera setup. It has the cheapest instance types, and the lowest resources so if it is doing a job for you, then there is no need to change. If you are on the basic service tier, then from a cost optimization process there is not too much more to say. Azure SQL Single DB comes with a choice of Basic, Standard and Premium. Azure SQL Database Service TiersĮnsure you are on the right service tier. Any instance using < 50% of CPU is a good candidate for scaling down. I would apply a similar rule to scaling up or down here based on needs. Managed Instances only use the vCore purchase model. There is no way to allocate extra memory however, this is bound to the number of vCores you have. You can choose your compute and storage resources separately. The vCore purchase model provides more flexibility than the DTU model. (Providing the lower class has enough storage) Again, adjust this to suit your own needs but there is no need to pay double unless you absolutely need to bake in a lot of spare capacity. If you are averaging below 50% and have few or no peaks above this, you can scale down. You can adjust this figure based on how relaxed or nervous you are the DTU getting pinned at 100%. If you are averaging above 85% and have regular peaks higher than that for DTU usage, you should scale up. When monitoring performance, you should be looking mainly at DTU percentage used and storage percentage used. They come with fixed storage per instance type. Small to medium single databases can use the DTU purchase model which is a blend of cpu, memory and IO. With this operating model, you should only pay for what you need, and adjust your scale as driven by demand, not future projections. Pay As You Go cloud solutions fall under operational expenditure (OPEX) as they are ongoing costs. Items such as electrical power, rent and staff salaries come under OPEX. Operational Expenditure (OPEX) on the other hand describes ongoing costs and operating expenses. For something like a database server, you might forecast what size you will need in 5 years and buy accordingly. It’s a big upfront expense to provide long term value. Once it is purchased, you don’t need to buy it again and can use it until it outlives is usefulness. CAPEX vs OPEXĬapital Expenditure (CAPEX) describes where an up-front purchase is made to provide value into the future. With the cloud, you should shift your thinking from a CAPEX operating model to and OPEX operating model. You should be ready to scale up or out when the time is right but not before. The rest will be available when you need them. With Azure SQL Database, there is no need to buy that 32 vCore service, when all you need right now is 4. Your cloud services should be scaled at the right size to handle current workloads, with a small buffer. With the cloud, it’s important to understand the concepts of scaling and elasticity. The Black + Decker Cordless Hedge has a 40-volt rechargeable lithium-ion battery that can tackle up to 6,000 square feet of trimming on one charge. If you choose a battery-powered version, make sure the battery has enough power to get you through your typical jobs. The Greenworks Corded Hedge Trimmer also has a lock that keeps the cord from coming unplugged if you extend your cord’s reach and tug too hard. With the Greenworks Corded Hedge Trimmer, for instance, you’ll need an extension cord with a round female outlet. Make sure you get a heavy-duty cord that’s compatible with the design of the cord on the hedge trimmer. If you’re looking for a corded hedge trimmer, chances are you will need an extension cord. You should also pay close attention to the weight of any hedge trimmer you choose, especially if you plan to use it telescopically, since heavier trimmers can be more difficult to control while using that function. But there are hedge trimmers with telescoping poles that will expand your reach well beyond what you’d get with a regular trimmer. If you have tall hedges and trees you’ll need to trim, a traditional hedge trimmer will require that you drag a ladder out every time you work. Some hedge trimmers can also pivot to make it easy to flatten the tops of your hedges, even if they’re higher up than you could normally reach. The motor plays a role in how efficient your hedge trimmer is, but you’ll also find that the blade is just as important. Two things that should be at the top of your list are power and precision-cutting ability. Unless you have a small yard, chances are the hedge trimmer won’t reach everywhere you need it to go, even with the longest extension cord you can find. It also tethers you to a power source, reducing your movement. A power cord will get in the way while you’re working, requiring you to constantly take care to avoid cutting it, tripping over it or getting it caught on objects. However, there are some good reasons to choose a hedge trimmer powered by a battery. This gives you unlimited cutting time and generally more power than a battery-powered trimmer. An electric hedge trimmer plugs into your nearest power outlet and draws on electricity. But you’ll have to make a decision between electric and battery-powered, with each bringing its own benefits. Today, you have alternatives to the gas-powered hedge trimmers of previous generations. As with string trimmers, chainsaws and other outdoor tools, the traditional fuel-powered type can put out noxious fumes, making the experience unpleasant and potentially bad for your health. If you’ve ever used a hedge trimmer, you likely know that there are some inconveniences with them. |
